What is a French Door Fridge?

Boasting highly Intelligent design and practical functionality, the French Door Fridge has grown to become the most popular type of refrigerator available today. It’s high aesthetic appeal and stylish architecture has turned it into a consumer favorite above older models such as the original top-feezer and the more recent side-by side versions. The model derives its name from the fact that two doors of equal size (similar to “french doors”) open out from the refrigeration compartment.

Advantages of a French Door Fridge

French door fridges were introduced in the late 1990s and are a clear improvement over previous designs, particularly the older top-freezer machines. Now, the refrigeration compartment is at chest level. The freezer is moved to the bottom of the appliance. It is a more efficient and practical placement because the fridge is much more often used than the freezer. Since only one of the two refrigerator compartment doors usually needs to be open at any one time, energy is conserved since there is correspondingly less inflow of heat from the outside.

Also different from the partly similar side by side fridges, the french door design comes with full width shelves. So one is able to store wide or bulky items such as baking pans and pizza boxes. many refrigerators come with adjustable shelving, however french door units have shelves which split down the middle. This makes them very versatile in terms of how they can be adjusted. For example, you can have long shelves across the width of the machine or you can stagger half-length shelves based on your space requirements. The french door architecture offers you the best of both worlds, unlike the Top-freezer model, which only offers low placed full width shelves or the side-by side model which does offer more versatile placement, but no full-width shelves.

French Door Refrigerator Added Conveniences

French Door Refrigerators can now come with a number of popular utilities including crisper drawers, ice machines, temperature regulators and adjustable shelving. These mean that this type of fridge generally comes with a higher price point than standard top-mount or even side by side refrigerators.

We have a comparison with side by side fridges in our dedicated article on the subject. Many prospective buyers want to know the pros and cons of each type of machine. For a more detailed look, see our article French Door vs Side by Side Refrigerators.

When buying a new refrigerator, french door models are now the most popular choice. However, there is a considerable amount of thought that has to go into your new purchase.

Advantages of a French Door Fridge

The french door design’s advantages can be summed up as follows:

  • French door refrigerators most often offer wide shelves and deeper door bins. So you can store a greater variety of items including large bottles, cartons, Tupperware containers or even packages of meat.
  • The deep, spacious door bins can contain gallon jugs and big pitchers, for example. Add to this, their adjustable nature and the convenience is clear.
  • The architecture is more sensible and practical. Items are within arm’s reach and you are able to clearly view and access everything in your fridge. It eliminates the problem, common with top-freezer models, of old portions of food hidden away and going bad in the back of the appliance
  • because the doors are half the width of the machine, they do not need to swing out as far. So if space is at a premium, or if, for example, there is an island in the middle of the kitchen and in front of the fridge, the better use of tight spaces is clearly an advantage.
  • With the freezer now at the bottom, you no longer have to bend down as far to reach items in the lower levels of the refrigeration unit. It is true that one does have o bend down to use the freezer, but this has to be done much less often and the pull-out drawers of the freezer unit also make those contents much more easily accessible.
  • Many models come with additional drawers above the freezer unit, including crisper drawers and chill drawers. These are specially designed to have different temperatures and humidity than the other compartments. They are perfect for keeping vegetables, fruit, delicate items and also items that need to be refrigerated at lower temperature than other fridge contents. So you can keep meats and fish cooler, for example and not have to worry about your bunch of lettuce freezing.
  • French door refrigerators simply look great! Modern manufacture also allows for pleasing stainless steel or brushed metal exteriors, for example. The appliance becomes an eye-catching conversation piece in your kitchen.

How to Buy a Refrigerator

We have a 3 part article guide dedicated to How to By a Refrigerator. Get more details there beginning with Part 1.

What Foods Should You Store in the Refrigerator?

This is a significant topic and concerns something that so many people get wrong. Different types of foods have to be stored in different ways. For example, meats, fruits, different kinds of vegetables, prepared meals, etc., not only have to be kept fresh in varying ways, but each may need to be kept in different compartments of the fridge. Should bread be kept in a refrigerator at all? What about mangoes? What is a crisper drawer anyway? We have the answers to these and several other questions in our 3 part article What Foods Should You Store in the Refrigerator?
