What is a Double Door Refrigerator?
The term Double Door Refrigerator is used to refer to Fridges with French Doors. These have become a favorite with consumers as a result of their intelligent design, delightful aesthetics and how practical and convenient they are to use. Because of this, French Door Refrigerators have become the most popular type of fridge in use today.
The innovative layout offers the refrigeration compartment at chest level. The freezer is moved to the bottom of the machine. This is a more efficient design than standard one-door fridges which have the freezer on top, since the fridge is used much more often than the freezer. Two doors of equal size (akin to “french doors”, thereby giving the model its formal name) open out from the unit. These lead to the use of the informal term Double Door Refrigerator.
These double door fridges are different from the somewhat similar Side by Side models, which have the freezer alongside the refrigeration compartment. The French door design comes with full width shelves. It gives the consumer easy placement of wide or bulky items such as pizza boxes. The design also comes with deeper and more spacious door bins. So there is much more room for large bottles and containers. There is also superior conservation of energy because -in general- only one door needs to be opened to access the fridge. So less heat flows in from the outside.
The Development of the Double Door Fridge
The design evolved naturally from previous norms. Since the 1950’s, the well known top-mount fridge had been the dominant model for home use. However, it came with a number of disadvantages, one of which was that one had to stoop low to get to the bottom shelves of the fridge. A natural evolution from this was the development of the bottom-mount model which moved the freezer unit down below. It made sense because the freezer is used much less often.
The next evolution in design was the Side by side refrigerator, also now quite common in many homes. Here, the fridge and the freezer compartments are next to each other. Both can conveniently be accessed. A major disadvantage however, is that the refrigeration unit is greatly reduced in width. Storage of larger wider items is a serious problem. Beginning in the 1980’s Double Door Refrigerators were introduced into the marketplace and they have gained popularity very quickly. With this design, the freezer is again moved down below and space is recovered in the refrigeration unit. With the use of two “french doors” energy efficiency is maintained. It also promotes a better use of space because each door requires much less room to open out into space.
Double Door Refrigerator Added Conveniences
Modern French door refrigerators come with several useful features. These can include ice machines, adjustable shelving, crisper drawers and temperature regulators. Understandably, these utilities also mean that these fridges are on average, decidedly more expensive than standard top-mount or even side by side fridges.

How to Buy a Refrigerator
This would seem to be a simple enough task, but it requires consideration and evaluation of a number of particulars and possible problems in order to make the appropriate choice. Fundamentally, there are three main variables to think through, before looking at the more specific details of the machine itself.
- Delivery: the logistics of delivery can be a nightmare if some basic elements are not thought through. These include access to your home or apartment.
- Access to Final Resting Spot: It is one thing to get your new fridge into your house or unit. It is yet another thing to be able to get it through doorways, hallways, stairs, etc. to its proper placement in your kitchen or other destination spot.
- Efficient Use of Space After Installation: You will likely be using your new machine quite a lot. Decide -in advance- how best to organize it internally. Also think through how it will affect the rest of the space in your kitchen or pantry
